M&A #37: Izzi Dickson

Next up is a newcomer with a mix to get you shaking. Izzi Dickson has joined up with the Playtime crew this year, and will be gearing up to tear it down in the Cambridge clubs when next term rolls around. Here she unapologetically blends huge percussiony bass tunes, with a strong emphasis on knitting together tight drum breaks and warm wubby basslines, leading you between memorable vocal and melodic islands. Her selections combine many areas of bass and breaks, with speed garage, dubstep, grime and breaksy techno all getting an outing, blended with the ease and class of someone who will undoubtedly be taking over the Cam club scene next year.

How did you record the mix?

With a DDJ-400

What were you trying to do with it?

I was just thinking about the kind of tracks that I love hearing in the club and what gets me moving. I wanted something high energy but quite cool at the same time, lots of breaks and bass and stuff - also I’d never recorded anything before so it was useful as a learning experience.

What’s your musical guilty pleasure?

The song High by Young Thug. Have you heard it? It’s amazing haha - a trap remix of Elton John’s Rocket Man. I’ve listened to it an embarrassing number of times.

What’s the last song you listened to?

Cuidado de Longe by Gal Costa

Who is your favourite producer/performer at the moment?

Probably L C Y from 6 Figure Gang. To be fair, all of 6FG are pretty great. Also saw Joy O the other day - always a pleasure, he’s amazing.

What is your go-to banger?

Champion Sound by Higgo. It’s a garage remix of American Boy, massive crowd-pleaser.

What’s coming up for you during/after Quarantine?

I won’t get to play another Playtime for a while but hopefully we’ll figure out a way to put out some online content. I’ll probably use this time to find new music and get crazy good at DJing. After quarantine, I’m absolutely gonna play some more gigs in Cambridge if I can.
